Born in Birmingham (according to information on 1851 census), around 1837. GRO reference to birth, Dec quarter 1837, Birmingham, 16: 272. The family must have moved to Birmingham between 1833 (birth of Hannah) and 1837 (birth of John Henry). Occupation on 1852 census listed as Gilt Jeweller (aged 13 years). Address at time of census was "5 House, 4 Court, Ruston Street North, Ladywood." Other occupiers on census night were Sarah Higgitt (mother) Head of House and widow, aged 49. Occupation described as "annuitant" (ie in receipt of an annuity). Sister, Hannah, aged 17, occupation steel pen peircer; William, brother, aged 3. The death of the father, Thomas must have occurred between 1847 and 1851.

Address at the time of the birth of Thomas Henry (September 1872) was at Avenue Road, Aston Manor. Search in 1871 census does not find reference for this road.
